Asthma

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that affects people of all ages.

Asthma is caused by inflammation and muscle tightening around the airways,  making it harder to breathe.

Symptoms can include wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and tightness in the chest.

Your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. This can trigger anxiety.

Asthma symptoms can be mild or severe and can come and go over time.

Managing Asthma

It can usually be managed with rescue inhalers to immediately lessen or stop  symptoms.

Controller inhalers prevent symptoms but do not help with a current attack.

Severe cases may require longer-acting inhalers that keep the airways open, as well as oral steroids.

In most cases, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking cigarettes and exercise can keep asthma symptoms at bay.

Nebulizers for Asthmatics

An asthma nebulizer is a small machine that turns liquid (such as albuterol) medicine into a mist that can be inhaled to treat asthma.

When using a nebulizer for labored breathing, you should:
• Sit upright and hold the medicine cup level
• Breathe through your mouth slowly, evenly and deeply (and hold it)
• Turn off the compressor if you need to cough or rest
• The treatment is over when the medicine is gone from the cup
You should report any side effects to your care team as soon as possible.
These include: Allergic reactions, heart rhythm changes, increased blood pressure, muscle pain or cramps, and wheezing or trouble breathing that gets worse after use.
